“Cullen Yates, 99 Years at Shawnee” Art and Auction Fundraiser

The Monroe County Historical Association, in conjunction with the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, is pleased to announce an art and auction fundraiser of the work of Cullen Yates (1866-1945), a noted American Impressionist.  The exhibit is titled, “Cullen Yates, 99 Years at Shawnee” and will be held Saturday, November 6 through Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in the Payette Room, 1 River Road, Shawnee-on-Delaware, PA 18356.

All proceeds benefit the Monroe County Historical Association, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving the history of Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

Cullen Yates achieved national prominence as a landscape painter during his lifetime. A native of Bryan, OH, Yates studied in New York and Paris, moving to Shawnee in 1908. The November Exhibit will feature regional and floral scenes and seascapes from local collections.  Many of the works of art will be available for purchase.

Tickets for the exhibition are available through the Monroe County Historical Association and can be reserved by phone at (570) 421-7703 or e-mail at mcha@ptd.net.  Supporters are invited to attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, November 6, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  The cost is $15.00 per person. Local collectors who wish to include their Yates paintings in the exhibition are encouraged to contact Hartzell’s Auction Gallery, Bangor, PA at 1-800-724-6808.

Other events held in conjunction with the exhibit include the “Tea and Yates” light luncheon and program on Sunday, November 7, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This program, focusing on Yates, his contemporaries and the place his paintings hold in American art history, will be presented by Dr. Melissa Geiger, professor of art history at East Stroudsburg University.  The cost is $35.00 per person. The cost for individuals interested in attending both the Opening Reception and the “Tea and Yates” luncheon and program is $45.00 per person.

An auction of Cullen Yates’ work will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Payette Room.
